ESN Hungary

One of the largest student organizations in Europe is the Erasmus Student Network (ESN). It was founded on October 16, 1989, and it was formally formed to promote and advance student exchange in 1990.

We are present in forty-two countries and over one thousand higher education institutions. The network is always growing and changing. We currently have about 15,000 active members who are helped by "buddy" members in various categories, primarily those who look after overseas students. Thus, ESN employs over 40,000 youth to provide its services to approximately 350,000 international students annually.

By fostering and advancing student exchange at all levels and offering an intercultural experience to students who are unable to spend time abroad, ESN strives to create an environment for learning that is more mobile and adaptable ("internationalization at home").

Our aim and values:

  • works in the interest of international students.
  • works to improve the social and practical integration of international students.
  • represents the needs and rights of international students on the local, national, and international level.
  • provides relevant information about mobility programmes.
  • motivates students to study abroad.
  • contributes to the improvement and accessibility of student mobility

Our Focus:

Current exchange students are the primary focus of ESN since they frequently experience difficulties (and feelings of abandonment) in their new surroundings. ESN thus aids with the process of academic, social, and practical integration. This is mostly accomplished through local section activities, which include social and cultural events like international cuisine festivals, movie evenings, language projects, travel to various parts of the nation, and, finally, parties. Furthermore, numerous departments have implemented mentorship programs, which primarily assist international students in integrating academically and practically. Additionally, ESN offers pertinent data and inspires upcoming exchange students to travel abroad and get pertinent cultural understanding.

How to get to Pecs:

If you are booking your ticket to come to Hungary, Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport will be the best location for you to land as traveling to Pecs from Budapest is easier from that location. After landing in Budapest, you have three options that you can go for to come to Pecs. Let us break it down one by one.

Ordering a shuttle or minibus:

If you are an international student who is travelling to Pecs with a lot of luggages, booking a minibus can be your best option. Although this can cost a bit of money, you can avoid all the hassle of public transportation and takes the least amount of time to reach. Each travel agency will charge differently depending on your time and luggage size but on an average, the cost is around 40 euro.

You can visit these websites to book your minibus:

Travel 4 You: https://travel4you.hu/en

Norigo Travel: https://www.norigotravel.hu/

Mecsek Travel: https://www.mecsektravel.hu/

Travelling with the intercity train:

It will take around 3.40 hours to get to Pecs if you want to use the railway option for your travel. You need to follow these steps to get to the train station from Budapest airport.

  • At the entrance of the airport, there are ticket booths from where you can buy tickets for public transportations. From there you need to select “single use” tickets and buy 3 of those. The tickets costs 450 Huf each, so approximately you need to pay 4 Euros for that.
  • From there you will see there are busses going from the entrance lane of airport and you need to use the “200E” bus. After getting inside the bus, don’t forget to validate your ticket at the bus door.
  • The 200E bus will take you to the Kőbánya - Kispest M stop [11 stops] (This is the last station of bus 200E). Form there you need to look for M3 metro that goes towards Ujpest-Kozpont (this will be written on the metro line) and again, you get on the M3 metro and validate your new single use ticket for that.
  • From that lane, you need to travel trough 8 stops and get down on Kalvin ter. From Kalvin ter metro station, you need to follow the path towards M4 metro line and take the metro that goes towards “Keleti pályaudvar” (it is the last stop of M4).
  • Finally, you can get down on Keleti pályaudvar and walk towards the train station. The Keleti train station is just outside the metro station.
  • After going inside the train station, you need to buy a ticket to go to Pecs from the ticket counter. Since you are travelling for the first time and still do not have a Hungarian student card with you, you will have to pay the full price which is approximately 3699 Huh which is 9 euro.
  • After getting your ticket, you need to look for your train’s platform number on the screen and get on the train with your luggage and other stuff.
  • The intercity train does not have any schedule from Budapest-Pecs from 8pm to 5am. Make sure to plan your travel according to the schedule. You can check the timing and buy your ticket here as well: https://jegy.mav.hu/

Travelling with long journey busses:

  • You must buy 2 single use tickets from the ticket booth that is near the airport entrance gate. It will cost you around 3 euros and you can pay with Huf or card.
  • From there you will see there are busses going from the entrance lane of airport and you need to use the “200E” bus. After getting inside the bus, do not forget to validate your ticket at the bus door.
  • You need to get down on the 4th stop which is “Nepligate” and from there you need to go towards the “Nepligate bus station.”
  • You need to check the screen where it shows the bus timing and platform number. After getting on the bus, you can buy the ticket directly from the bus driver with cash only. The price is 4200 Huf.
  • You need to keep in mind that there are no night busses that goes to pecs, hence, make sure to plan your travel beforehand. You can also buy your ticket online with card from: https://www.volanbusz.hu/

After getting to Pecs, you can use a taxi to go to your apartment/ dorm. You can either get a taxi from the station or install the “Bolt” application to call a taxi.

Travelling to Pecs for the first time can be a big hustle and a bit expensive. But once you get your Hungarian student card, you can get 50% discounts on all ticket purchases.

Additionally, you can buy a “monthly Hungary pass” for 1890 Huf that lets you travel anywhere in Hungary with just a seat reservation.

Upon Arrival Procedures:

There are many things you need to know when you first arrive at a university from another nation. These include things like your bank account, student card, and residence permit as well as health insurance. We will break it down in separate parts for easier navigation.

Visa

With a valid travel document or personal identity document, citizens of the European Economic Area (EEA, which includes the EU, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein), as well as Switzerland, are permitted admission into Hungary and are granted the right to remain there for a maximum of 90 days after the date of entry.

If engaged in a recognized program at an educational institution, students who are citizens of the European Economic Area (EEA) are permitted to stay in Hungary for longer than three months. Such students must register at the regional office of the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing within ninety-three days of their entry or apply online through the Enter Hungary platform.

Students should be able to show a certificate of admission from the school or any other paperwork proving they are enrolled as students when they register. The registration certificate is valid in conjunction with a valid travel document or personal identity document and has no expiration date.

According to the Schengen agreement, nationals of third countries need a visa to enter Hungary's territory and, if they are from a nation where a visa is required, to stay for up to 90 days within 180 days. The application for a visa must be sent to the Hungarian Consulate in the nation of the applicant's

nationality or the nation in which the applicant resides permanently or temporarily.

Health care and insurance

For foreign nationals, emergency medical care and first aid are provided free of charge; in other circumstances, payment is required. Having insurance for Hungary is a requirement for enrolment in any University of Pécs faculty. When EU citizens go to another member state, they are covered by the European Health Insurance Card and have the same rights and obligations as nationals of that member state in terms of social security. The EU card does not permit the use of postponed care; it only covers services that are deemed "medically necessary" (such as oxygen therapy and dialysis).

International students are strongly advised to obtain local private medical insurance for the duration of their studies, even though they may be permitted to utilize their insurance from home in Hungary. For further information, please contact:

Mr. Tamás NÁDAI

E-mail: [email protected]

Address: 7624 Pécs, Damjanich utca 30. (Groundfloor, to the left)

Having a Social Security Number (TAJ szám)/ a Hungarian Social Security Card (TAJ kártya) is the second option. You can access Hungary's healthcare system by using the "TAJ" health insurance ID.

You have two options: ask your program coordinator or mentor to see if they can manage the paperwork or apply yourself at the nearby National Health Insurance Fund (Országos Egészségbiztosítási Pénztár in Hungarian) located at Nagy Lajos Király Street 3. Pécs, 7623. When applying in person, you must bring your passport, EU ID card, enrolment certificate, address card (lease agreement or dorm contract), and registration card. You can also apply online through your university Neptune ID id under the “Administration” button. You will find the “Request” option in the drop-down menu and there you can apply for your Taj card by submitting all the necessary documents. You will receive an email id to sign the final document, and your Taj card will be ready in 2 weeks.

How to get housing?

In Pécs, as a foreign student, you must arrange housing for the duration of your study. There are two main options available to you: staying in one of our dorms or rent an apartment.

Dormitories:

Applying for a place in a dorm is the simplest and, most of the time, least expensive way to get a place. The dorms provide university students with secure housing. There is a planned weekly cleaning in each room and a once-every-three-week bed linen change, which can be quite beneficial with your everyday tasks, particularly during exam season.

Dormitories of the University of Pécs available for international students and rent fees:

  • Szántó Dormitory- 73 590 HUF (H-7633 Pécs, Szántó Kovács János u. 1/d.)
  • Damjanich Dormitory- 81 690 HUF (H-7624 Pécs, Damjanich u. 30.)
  • Balassa Dormitory-62 990 HUF (H-7624 Pécs, Jakabhegyi út 6.)

If you applied for dormitory and got accepted, you can move into the appointed dormitory right after your arrival.

Things you should have when you check in:

  • Passport
  • 3,5*4,5 cm passport photo (this is necessary for the dormitory card)
  • Cash or bank card to pay the rent (you cannot move in if it is not paid)

Verification that you will be a University of Pécs student in the given academic year and that your application for dormitory placement has been approved.

Things you should bring along:

  • Basic kitchenware and cutlery
  • Towels
  • Bedsheets (If you feel more comfortable sleeping in your own sheets)
  • Although the dormitories have laundry room, you must provide your own washing powder and washing liquid.
  • Drying stand
  • UTP cable for internet access

Renting an apartment:

A two-room apartment may rent for 80.000 to 200.000 HUF (250–620 EUR) a month; the cost may vary depending on the location, proximity to the institution, and other factors. Please be aware that the rental price does not cover property management fees or utility costs. Always keep in mind that you might have to pay for and sign up for an Internet connection at a local communication service provider. The lodging provider will always need a deposit, which is typically equal to one or two monthly fees. Prior to moving in, this must be paid in full, and it is released once the unit is vacated.

Below, you can find real estate agencies who can help you with finding an accommodation depending on your budget and other needs in Pecs:

Bank and Finance.

For financial management purposes, you might need to open a second local bank account while you are in Pécs.

Foreign nationals can also open combination, currency, or forint bank accounts with banks. It is advisable to inquire about the necessary documents from the selected bank before proceeding with the procedure. They typically request a residence card in addition to an ID card, passport, or driver's license. Depending on the local regulations of the financial institutions, a resident permit can be used in place of a residence card if you do not have one.

In the city centre, you can find a bank on every corner – here are a few of them with at central locations:

Wellbeing and counselling

The University of Pecs views student counselling as an essential service. Its main goal is to offer students responsive, discreet, and expert psychological counselling. The offering is designed to provide counselling to students participating in the English language program and aims to provide professional support to students facing a range of obstacles resulting from changes and disruptions in their academic and personal lives. The program can assist students in need of professional assistance who maintain control over their daily lives but encounter transient challenges that they are not the

most qualified to manage on their own. Complete discretion is guaranteed, and there is no cost for the service.

Accessing legal help

The Campus Legal Aid Clinic, or CLAC, offers UP students’ expert, closely supervised legal help. Many international students have sought legal counsel from the law clinic in previous years. They can discuss their legal issue with certain law students in person. After that, students receive supervised legal counsel from a law professor. It is possible to provide legal counsel and conduct consultations in both German and English. Please do not hesitate to contact if you have any questions or concerns regarding your lease agreement, equitable treatment, or other civil wrongs.

We wish you a wonderful stay in Pécs and hoping that it will be an everlasting memory for you!
